Samui Butterfly Garden (aka Na Tian Butterfly Garden) opposite Centara Villas Samui in Natien, in the south of the island offers a kaleidoscope of colours provided by hundreds of spectacular butterflies. For bug enthusiasts there's also an Insect Museum as well as a bee house.
The beautifully landscaped garden features many colourful tropical flowers so, along with the multihued butterflies, it’s a must that you take your camera.
The butterfly section looks like a big open-air garden but it is actually covered with netting, allowing the butterflies to fly freely but never beyond the limited area. Here, the keeper lines the walkway with their favourite food such as sweet bananas and bright-red hibiscus flowers. If you go directly to one of those spots, the lively creatures will approach you within no time.
This garden is also a good place to study butterfly host plants where the female butterflies lay their eggs, for example blood flower (red head cotton), Mexican creeper (or coral vine) and marigold. There are a number of exotic flowers around Samui Butterfly Garden including cyrtostachys lakka (lipstick palm), ptychosperma palm, and bird of paradise – all indigenous to the area.

Another interesting stop is an enclosed structure known as the bee house (it was actually built as a Thai-style house) on top of the replica waterfall in the garden centre.
Insect World features rare insects from Thailand and other countries such as various kinds of scorpions and big spiders as well as less scary types of insects such as stick and leaf insects. Nearby is an exhibit of cocoons and caterpillars. It’s a sad fact of life to learn that some butterfly species (once in their adult stage) have a short life span of only about a week or two.
Bring along your swimming suit as not far from Samui Butterfly Garden are beautiful coral reefs at Wang Bay. Visitors can choose to observe them either by staying dry in a glass-bottom boat or by snorkelling above them; the boat is well equipped with wet suits, snorkels and masks.
Another challenging activity is to walk 50 steps up to the stunning viewpoint, also in the same grounds as the farm. The incredible view from the top is well worth the hike. Once up there you can grab a cool beer or have a seafood meal in a local restaurant nearby. Talk about convenience!
Opening Hours: Daily from 08:30 – 17:30
Location: On Natien Beach opposite Centara Villas Samui (Formerly Central Samui Village), south of the island.
