About halfway along Bophut’s main street you’ll come across the Bophut Plaza – a collection of open-sided boutiques and shops.
The opening of the soi is flanked by a Majesty tailor shop with its bespoke shirts and suits and ready-to-wear shoes, then comes a watch shop with several knockoff ‘brands’ (don’t go swimming wearing one of these copies). Further along, you’ll come across ceramics, jewelry, bags, T-shirts, and hand-carved soaps.
Perhaps the best and certainly the most original outlet here is Piti’s art shop (“no photos please”) with original and attractive works done by K. Piti and his girlfriend. Buyers are encouraged to discard the frame and roll the painting up to facilitate transportation home.
Finally, at the end of the soi, you’ll find a colourful textiles shop with wall hangings, sarongs (that can also be used as wall hangings) and embroidered cotton. There's a lot on offer here and as it's a shady place you can afford to visit during the daytime and take your time choosing your purchases.
Like most destinations in Asia, bargaining and haggling is accepted and indeed accepted at Bophut Plaza. Always bargain with a smile and remember that you cannot go lower than your counter offer so make your price relatively low to begin with.
If the piece of merchandise is available in other stores you have the upper hand. If the object for sale is unique then the advantage lies with the seller.
