One of Bophut’s culinary success stories, Le Cabanon will have you smiling from ear to ear as soon as you pick up the clever English and French menu – made from an old LP cover! The drinks list is glued to the actual record itself - another touch that indicates the fact that to say the least you’re in for an unusual meal here. Le Cabanon serves mostly French food but does have a Thai chef which bodes well for Thai food lovers.
Beachside, the breezes are brisk and the restaurant amplifies them, due to its almost corridor-like design, from beach to shopping road. There’s also a kids’ menu and the restaurant redefines beachside dining with bamboo tables and chairs in the sand on the beach (some at rather rakish angles!)
The restaurant’s yacht ropes, orchids in coconut husks and wooden flooring all lend an eccentric feel to Le Cabanon which is owned and run by a genial Frenchman with a marked sense of humour. Try the tummy-filling pizzas, the marvelous soup de poisson, or grilled fish from the open kitchen.
Upstairs, you’ll find a pristine and renovated lounge space where you can sip your cocktails and admire the views out over to Koh Phangan and the yachts as they pass by. Le Cabanon is a rare find: original, quirky and amusing, the food here is pretty good, too.
