The Shack Bar & Grill is a long-time favourite restaurant located in the central part of Bophut Fisherman’s Village. Its success and longevity are both down to the quality of the food and the excellent service as, unlike many of its competitors, The Shack cannot rely on any sea views (it is situated on the ‘wrong’ side of the road - unlike most of the Bophut’s bars and restaurants which face the ocean.)
Set in a splendid open-sided wooden cabin – hence its name – and under Irish management, The Shack specialises in grilled and barbecued meat and seafood, Tex-Mex delicacies, and excellent wines. Rates are pretty dear although quality in these parts always comes at a certain price; the high attendance most nights after 20:00 reflects the popularity of this excellent Samui restaurant.
The Shack Bar & Grill is a one storey wooden restaurant featuring two kitchens at the front and the back of the venue. The former is an open kitchen that is in charge of the grills/barbecues giving out the appetising smells of roasting meat and fish to the street, while the latter is a classic neat and clean kitchen in which a talented team prepares starters, side-dishes and desserts. The venue can comfortably seat up to 50 guests in a western-like décor blending the warm colours of wood and red cushions.
The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly despite the fact the venue can get pretty busy (reservation is recommended). Service is second to none: waitresses and waiters are alert to ensure that everything is just fine with the diners, and the restaurant’s manager passes from to table to table, chatting with guests and verifying that all is right as discreetly as possible. Soft rock, blues, and jazz tunes create an agreeable musical background in phase with the spirit of the restaurant (large black and white photos of American musicians from the ‘50s are hanged on the walls all around the place).
The Shack Bar & Grill has been amongst the best steak houses of Koh Samui since its opening in 2003; it serves only imported meat from Australia, United States, and Japan (Wagyu steak from Kobe), and besides local seafood (tiger and king prawns, squid, and fish) has a great choice of imported crab from Alaska, lobster from Maine in the US and salmon from Norway. Obviously, top end quality imported ingredients do not come cheap; therefore a dinner as The Shack can be considered as a rather expensive treat – count around 1,000 baht per person.
The Shack Bar & Grill also hosts an excellent team of mixologists and sommeliers as its drink-list features excellent original cocktails and wines: Oyster Shooter (fresh imported oyster with tomato juice, lemon, Tabasco, and vodka) or White Wine Spritzer (white wine, soda, and a squeeze of lime) are just great for aperitif, while a red Shiraz cheekily named ‘Fat Bastard’ from France (excuse my French) or an Angus The Bull - Cabernet Sauvignon from (obviously) Australia, are the perfect accompanying drink for a juicy steak.
