Koh Mudsum, also referred to as Koh Matsum, is a small island on the south side of Koh Samui. This is a favourite place for day-trippers to enjoy a picnic on the white sandy beach, and it also has good opportunities for snorkelling, kayaking and just spending some relaxing.
There are many tour operators offering day trips to Koh Mudsum, these trips usually start around 8:00 to 8:30 at Thong Krut Pier, which is located at the most Southern tip of Koh Samui. A longtail boat will then take you to the island in around 30 minutes and bring you back around 15:00-16:30. Tours include a lunch on the beach and soft drinks, sometimes it includes kayaking or a trek on the neighbouring island of Koh Taen as well. Trip costs vary depending on the itinerary and optional extras but you can expect to pay around 2,000 baht. Transport to and from your hotel is usually included.
If you prefer to visit on your own than you can rent a scooter and make your way to Thong Krut, where you'll have to bargain with a fisherman to take you to the island. Once on Koh Madsum, you do have one small restaurant and a kayak rental, but don't expect lively beach bars. Besides this, there is one resort, The Treasure Koh Madsum, in the middle of the island.
