Haad Rin Restaurants & Dining

Where and What to Eat in Haad Rin

It may sound like a trite maxim but many visitors end up eating local food after having tried out Thai versions of western food. This especially applies to Haad Rin where the word ‘speciality’ is bandied about with little real meaning and more often than not the cook is Thai. Ersatz western restaurants abound whereas Thai food stalls are not only a lot cheaper but more dependable, food wise.

That said, a wander through the town’s streets reveals a surprising swathe of ethnic restaurants taking in Indian, Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Greek, Israeli, Moroccan, English pub grub, Scandinavian, Vietnamese and of course Thai food. Some of these are worth checking out and some are barely disguised attempts to fob any old thing off on the public – Haad Rin is, after all, an out-and-out tourist destination.

Diners can order mojitos or carafes of sangria as well as ice-cool beer. Sports TVs adorn the wall and the open-sided place is fan-cooled.

Bite Delight

If you fancy the flavours of Spanish and Portuguese cuisines accompanied by a glass of exquisite red or white wine, then Bite Delight should be on your list of the must-visit restaurants for your next holiday in Koh Phangan. With dark green walls, wooden furnishing and dim lights, Bite Delight has an agreeable lounge atmosphere in its cosy yet unpretentious dining room. The cuisine served at Bite Delight, apart from the Iberian specialities, is oriented toward fusion food.

Bare brick walls, soft lights, 'The Beach' on the TVs (surprise surprise) and Burmese, English-speaking staff all add up to an above average Haad Rin dining experience. Bongo knows how to pack ‘em in and tables are ‘intimately’ close together. It may not be haute cuisine at its best but it’s well ventilated and pretty cheap.

  • Opening Hours: 08:00 – late
  • Location: Haad Rin East
  • Cuisine: Western and Thai

Lazy House

‘Please no Sleeping’ says a blackboard sign in this already pretty laid-back restaurant. Lazy House has been on the Haad Rin scene for many years and its experience shows. While not the snazziest place in town it’s comfortable and competent with Burmese English-speaking staff, a Thai and English menu, a good fruit smoothie choice and industrial-sized fans to keep things cool.

  • Opening Hours: 08:00 – late
  • Location: Central Haad Rin
  • Cuisine: Western and Thai

Lucky Crab

It seems almost strange that, given its location, Haad Rin doesn’t have a lot more seafood outlets. Lucky Crab is Thai run and its main attraction is the freshness of its daily catch. Seating is inside and kerb-side, which can be a little rich in carbon monoxide but good for people watching.

  • Location: Central Haad Rin
  • Cuisine: Thai, Seafood

Out and out Italian, and Italian run, Monnalisa (sic) isn’t the most attractive restaurant in town but if you’re after the Real McCoy food-wise you could do a lot worse than heading down here for the pastas, pizzas, gelatos, espressos and wine that all add up to the Italian dining experience.

  • Opening Hours: 13:00 – 24:00
  • Location: Central Haad Rin

Om Ganesh

Northern Indian cuisine near Haad Rin’s pier. Here you can order set menus or go for the all-you-can-eat options. The upstairs open-sided dining part is great for watching the masses head through town from ferries and boats to party, and as it stays open late you can grab a bite if and when the munchies hit. On-site souvenir shop.

  • Location: Main Road heading to the pier
  • Cuisine: Indian

Same Same Burger House

Run by the same people who established the famous cooking school of the same name, you can be sure that Same Same is a cut above the rest when it comes to western fast food. With 100% fresh ground beef, Heinz sauces, homemade pickles and a ‘can-do’ attitude, Same Same shoots and scores when it comes to fast food.

Same Same Restaurant

This is an enjoyable and pleasant location with live music, although the sound checks before the show can get a bit noisy. Same Same specialises in Scandinavian food with English pub grub, Mexican food and pizzas. Décor-wise it is warmly lit with a central ‘bar’ and open sides looking down to the street. All in all a good place for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Opening Hours: 08:30 – 01:00
  • Location: Haad Rin East
  • Cuisine: Western and Thai

This is quite simply Khao San Road by the sea; bamboo and cane seating with a sofa area, overhead fans, way too many TVs, and a cooling stone floor. Unique has an ‘international’ menu consisting of Greek, Thai, Indian, Italian, and Mexican food. If you have mastered the art of ignoring babbling TVs while eating then you’ll enjoy the wide range of dishes at Unique.

  • Opening Hours: 10:00 – late
  • Location: Central Haad Rin
