26th Degree Restaurant - Koh Samui

Dinner with a View at The Kala Resort near Lamai Beach

26th Degree is the signature restaurant of The Kala Samui, a charming boutique resort located between Chaweng and Lamai Beaches on Koh Samui’s east coast. This chic resort blends contemporary style with some French-Cambodian colonial antiques, giving it a post-modern heritage touch. Built on a hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, The Kala offers some particularly outstanding views over Chaweng Bay to the north.

26th Degree Restaurant, situated one floor below the hotel’s lobby/reception, is perfectly in line with the whole resort’s stylish décor and tranquil, feel-good holiday atmosphere. One floor below the dining terrace stands the Rabbit Bar: featuring a large terrace overlooking the swimming pool, it’s the perfect place to sip a skillfully mixed cocktail before dinner. As for the food, 26th Degree Restaurant serves a classic choice of Thai and international favourites all prepared with the freshest and finest ingredients.

26th Degree Restaurant is simply an outstanding venue: the architecture and design has plenty of modern details, whilst the overall colonial feel to the place keeps it in line with The Kala’s motto: ‘where time stands still’. High square-shaped columns, polished concrete (inside) and black marble (on the terrace) flooring, Asian antiques, wooden furnishings and ceramic mosaic table tops all make the restaurant is stylish in itself - although the real highlight remains the stunning view to the northeastern tip of Chaweng Beach and the small island marking its end, Koh Matlam.

Before dinner, guests can enjoy a drink at the Rabbit Bar which shares the same view (from a slightly lower point) with the restaurant above. Just for the anecdote, both the restaurant and the bar have names related to coconut trees: for the former, 26th Degree, indicates the parallels (north and south) in between which coconut trees grow the best (global warming may have incidence on that fact sooner or later though); while for the latter, people born in the year of the Rabbit (in Chinese astrology) are believed lucky and successful in the cultivation of Coconut trees.

26Th Degree Restaurant has separate menus for lunch, dinner and special romantic candlelight meal available on the resort deck next to the sea at the foot of the cliff. The three menus share in common the fact that they host both Thai and international dishes, the lunch menu being slightly lighter in calories than the two others. Classics such as yam talay (spicy seafood salad at 350 baht), tom kha kai (chicken in creamy locally grown coconut milk sauce at 350 baht) and beef or chicken massaman curry (the house speciality at 380 baht) are must-sample if you have a craving for some Thai , while their Norwegian salmon (served with mash potato, asparagus, garlic and wasabi mayonnaise at 700 baht) or tandoori chicken (served with yellow rice and yoghurt sauce at 550 baht) are great if you would like to sample something a bit different.

The wine-list is primarily oriented to new world labels, although a few old world wines – French and Italian – deserve to be tasted. The house red wine is a Chilean Hugo Linaje Cabernet Sauvignon (350 baht per glass) which suits the wide range of food pretty well. Romantic Candlelight Dinners offer a choice of three four-course set menus (seafood, meat, and Thai) which are charged 6,900 baht for two including one bottle of house wine (reservation must me made one day in advance). The chef at 26Th Degree Restaurant also gives Thai cooking classes at the restaurant (for minimum two guests) - please kindly inform the reception one day in advance.

Summing up, 26Th Degree Restaurant is a lovely place to dine at with some opulent décor, relaxed and tranquil atmosphere and, of course, that view!
