Lamai Beach Restaurants & Dining
Where and What to Eat in Lamai Beach
A quieter destination than Chaweng, dining wise, Lamai seems to have different priorities without losing sight of the fun factor.
Most of the area's most popular restaurants are located in the centre and are minutes away from each other.
Erik's/Ciao
Erik's is a Swedish restaurant, formerly known as Ciao – and it still is to regulars, which is why it keeps the old name sign out front. Justifiably popular with the many Scandinavian visitors in the area, it has daily specials and suggestions written up on blackboards, plenty of dining space, an open front giving out onto the Main Street and flat-screen TV's for sports. Generous portions and genuine Swedish cuisine make it attractive and this is the place to go when you want a break from English or Asian food. Also serves pizzas.

Cost: Affordable
Open: 09:00 – 24:00

La Palma
A large, two-floored eatery right on Lamai's main drag. Fan-cooled, La Palma's upstairs might just be the best people-watching location in Lamai. This is a typical, no-nonsense trattoria in the best Italian tradition with a wood-fired pizza oven, bare brick walls, plenty of pictures of La Bella Italia and friendly waitresses.
Location: Lamai Main Street opposite McDonald's
Style: Italian
Cost: Affordable
Open: 12:00 – 24:00
Tel: 086 280 0500
Aspendos
Thai-style food with the added bonuses of English breakfasts and döner kebab, along with smatterings of Mexican dishes, Aspendos seems to be trying to cover all the bases at the same time and even has a fresh fish boat display out front, a photo menu and an attractive patio/terrace. Another good people-watching spot.
Location: Opposite McDonald's Main Street Lamai
Lamai Diner
A large, cavernous warehouse-like restaurant with concrete floors, colourful lighting and a bustling atmosphere, this is the place for mixed grills, fresh seafood and cold beer. At least with a roof this high the place is well ventilated.
Location: Lamai Main Street
Style: Grills, seafood
Cost: Affordable
Open: 18:00 – 23:00
Salathai
Salathai is a popular restaurant name on Samui but the Salathai on Lamai's Main Street is something special. Although the classic decor is attractive in itself, the main reason why people visit Salathai again and again is the food. The restaurant serves up delicious, well presented and reasonably priced dishes from its extensive Thai and European menu. They also have an excellent selection of fresh seafood and a large choice of wines to suit all budgets. Salathai is also known for its great service, with some of the most attentive and pleasant staff around, no matter how busy the restaurant gets. The Salathai signature steak is a must-try as is the steamed sole in lemon sauce with butter rice.

The Patio
Well worth a visit, the Patio is Lamai's fanciest restaurant on the beach. Still reasonably priced by western standards, the food is fantastic and looks as good as it tastes. The Patio's menu is extensive with choices from European, Thai and seafood dishes. The restaurant is famous for its beautiful water features; so many, in fact, that wherever you sit in the large open space you can hear the soft sounds of water cascading. Recommended dishes are the black ink fettuccine with smoked chicken breast, asparagus and bacon in a spicy tomato sauce and the Szechuan duck with sea scallops.

Outback Bar
Aussie-owned and expat-frequented, the Outback Bar is the place to meet locals, to hear their beach yarns, to eat all-day English breakfasts and to sink a few beers in cheery company. Serving up Australian steaks and cuts as well as beer, food here is not exactly haute cuisine but it's hearty, reasonably priced and consumed in friendly surroundings. Occasional live music, internet and good service, all live sports shown.

Bauhaus Bistro
Once the party central of Lamai, the Bauhaus has toned down from mad all-hours foam parties to serving up fresh seafood, steaks, schnitzels and mixed grills. With a decent wine list and a chic ambience, the restaurant, right next door to the Shamrock Pub, is slap-bang in the centre of things. It also features a large lounge area with TV's – all in all, one of Lamai's leading players.

Shamrock Pub
With daily specials and a good selection of pub grub along with Irish beers, Shamrock is not just a pub – more like a restaurant with lively entertainment early on in the evening. The pub also features large-screen TV's showing live sports on Saturdays and at special occasions, a darts board, a professional slate pool table and a gaggle of lovely Thai waitresses as well as six nights a week of live music – expect no sham rock here – it's the real thing.

Will Wait
An offspring from Chaweng's Will Wait restaurants, Lamai's version offers pretty much the same menu. There are freshly baked goodies, Thai and western standards, a good salad choice and the same quasi-backpacker ambience enhanced by TV's showing English-language sports and DVD's of the latest and classic movies.

Beach Republic
An ambitious beachside location, Beach Republic incorporates lazy, poolside dining, chilled-out music, very modern design and pioneering tapas and mains menus. With a good wine list, impressive 'mocktails' and a chic, urbane feel to the place, beachside dining doesn't come much better than this. Try the Republic masaman lamb shank or the raw diced tuna steak and hang around on the huge outdoors sofas till the attractive red lights come on at dusk, framing one of the best sea views around. The Cliff
The Cliff's hillside location between Chaweng and Lamai affords it some of the best sea views on the island. Split into separate restaurant and bar areas, this award-winning restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean cuisine. Dishes like Portuguese piri piri chicken, clams in white wine Sauce) and Goan curried prawns come in large hearty portions and are a perfect match for one of the many reasonably priced New World Wines on offer. Musically, there's decent chill out tunes in the bar, with occasional guest DJ's, and more traditional Latino grooves in the restaurant. Overall, a great place to spend a lazy, sunny, afternoon.

Dishes like spaghetti tom yam seafood, pan-fried Atlantic salmon with a honey soya reduction, and choices of traditional Thai and Italian choices have proven popular with local expats and discerning visitors. With an olive-green décor and sweeping marine vistas, Dr Frogs is a trendy place to be and complements its agreeable atmosphere with DJ's and live music. Free WiFi.

Rocky's
Reputedly the most beautiful restaurant on Samui, Rocky's subtle lighting arrangements are due to silk hanging lanterns that provide a uniform touch throughout the restaurant. Located just south of the Grandmother and Grandfather rocks, the 60-seater restaurant is open sided and flanks a free-form swimming pool and overlooks a rocky beach in a stunning setting. Rocky's Thai chef has had extensive international experience and the result is a fine choice of Thai and worldwide cuisine. There's plenty of entertainment in the form of a Filipino singer and Thai traditional shows.
