Lamai Beach Shopping

What to Buy and Where to Shop in Lamai

As with other locations on the island, Lamai's shopping is fairly centralised with most places a stroll away from each other and based almost uniquely on the Beach Road – the Main Street.

As always, have a good look around before you purchase goods and compare prices and quality – there's no hurry!

Lamai Fresh Market

Even with the advent of a Tesco-Lotus outlet in Lamai and a whole fleet of convenience stores, the local fresh market's appeal hasn't faded. Setting up at 05:00 and finally packing its wares at 20:00 every day, the market is a colourful kaleidoscope of exotic and unfamiliar fruit, vegetables, grilled fish and meat, fake Barbies, Man U and Liverpool FC shirts, kids toys, takeaway curries, beachwear and iced desserts. What you can't get here is probably not worth having, at least while staying in Lamai. Visitors with limited budgets will find plenty of takeaway food here for as little as 20 baht a meal. The market is flanked by satellite clothes shops. All negotiations are generally carried out with genial smiles and if you wish to bargain prices down (you're expected to) keep smiling and use a pleasant tone of voice.

Nearby Lamai

Hin Ta Hin Yai Rocks

Next to the famous grandmother and grandfather rocks in southern Lamai are a group of stalls selling a range of goods. The atmosphere here is great fun, with a real 'by the seaside' feeling to it. These stalls are one of the best places to pick up traditional coconut wood carvings and shell ornaments. Try not to buy the coral or larger shells as this encourages reef damage and bringing coral into your home country can land you in hot water. Try the local Thai caramel and coconut sweet desserts as well they are absolutely delicious and a great gift for friends back home.

Location: Ring Road south of Lamai

Island Books

Island books is probably the best secondhand book shops on the island. Paul the owner is fastidious about the quality of books he puts on his shelves and is extremely knowledgeable about his stock. The bookshop is very well organised and easy to navigate and Paul is always on hand to give advice and answer questions. Island Books has a large range of books in English, French and German and a small selection of other languages. You can choose to buy or rent your book and Paul will also buy your old books from you. All the books are priced very reasonably at around 180 baht.

Opening Hours: 09:00 – 20:00
Location: On the Ring Road just before the Buddy Oriental Samui Beach Resort

Popala House

This cave-like shop is not much to look at from the outside but there are some wonderful finds to be had, once inside the gloom. The shop is packed to the gills with stunning teak furniture, ornate carvings and religious idols in metal and wood religious images. Be prepared to barter hard in here though; the owner is stubborn!
