Meaning ‘simple’ or ‘straightforward’ La Bonne Franquette lives up to its name. Located on Mae Nam’s walking street near the traffic lights, La Bonne Franquette has an excellent reputation amongst Samui’s Francophone community for unpretentious and unassuming food.
Georges, the owner and chef, is the son and grandson of chefs and he exudes an enthusiasm for food as well as a warm welcome. At La Bonne Franquette people nostalgic for French cuisine can tuck into snails, French cheeses, Corsican wine, cold cuts, baguettes, beef bourguignon, grilled meats and daube along with much more.

Opened in 1999, La Bonne Franquette, while being a friendly and welcoming place, is not going to win any design awards: Its simple latticed fan-cooled terrace gives out onto the walking street while the interior is unremarkable, consisting of a simple bar and a few tables, much like a Lyonnais bistro.
But one main advantage of this restaurant is that it’s in a prime people-watching spot and never more so than on Thursday evenings when the walking street morphs into a street bazaar and when the many fascinating and vividly lit stalls set up. This when the area bursts to life so if visiting La Bonne Franquette on a Thursday evening try to get there early enough (before six o’clock) to secure a parking place.
