What to Do at Night in Chaweng Beach

Chaweng is Koh Samui's Party Central. All along the Beach Road you will see sois (streets) leading off into warrens of bars and pubs of varying appeal and popularity. The epicentre of all this hedonism and fun is undoubtedly Soi Green Mango in Central Chaweng, with Soi Reggae, by the lake, coming in a close second.

Before we get too hyperbolic about Chaweng's nightlife it's best to remember that bars close at 02:00 by order of the police so the party curve zooms upward past midnight and peaks a little earlier than some would prefer. And yes, some bars stay open later – those whose owners have friends in high places. Here are some Chaweng night areas to check out.

Chaweng Bars, Clubs and Other Venues

Another Samui institution, the Ark Bar has been at it for quite a few years. Even though it's changed hands several times the bar/restaurant still uses the same methods to draw people in with fire dancers, ambient music, dining and dancing on the beach and a relaxed atmosphere that extends to a child-friendly vibe, even late at night. Bar @ C

0

Part of the Amari Palm Reef Resort, Bar @ C has obviously had no expense spared in its creation and has a fashionable appeal more readily associated with Bangkok bars than other hotel bars on Samui. There's a variety of seating areas including large day beds and giant sofas. In the evening discreet spot lighting is to the fore and a long wall shelf light slowly pulsates different hues, to add to the lounge-style ambience. As the name suggests, the bar is also only a few metres from the sea.

One of the coolest places in town – in more ways than one: The walls, bar, sculptures and seats are made from Canadian ice and are permanent fixtures. And no, it's not the usual tiny, fridge-like arrangement that many ice bars go for; Bar Ice is big enough to hold elephant and tuk tuk sculptures and has separate rooms.

The chilliest is kept at -7 degrees, lit by an atmospheric LED lighting system with a full colour spectrum. You can chill in the pub-like part and even sit outside in a beer garden if you wish to smoke. A unique and worthwhile experience. Read More...

Cha Cha Moon Beach Club

0

Opened in 2013, Cha Cha Moon Beach Club is a stylish bar/night club located right on the beach of Chaweng between Ark Bar Beach Club and Montien House. The access to Cha Cha Moon from Chaweng Beach Road is a journey in itself: punters have to walk through a long sandy path flanked by an abandoned resort under construction before to reach the vivid colourful light of the beach club entrance. Wide open on the beach and built mostly with natural materials, Cha Cha boasts a modern architecture which successfully integrated the existing coconut and palm trees fringing Chaweng Beach.

Cha Cha Beach Club is only a bar/disco for now (August 2014); a restaurant is planned to open toward the end of 2014. Punters can find here the usual suspects in matter of alcoholic or not beverages at prices slightly superior than in standard bars - all beers at 140 baht, and cocktails at 250 baht. Full & Black Moon Parties are the climax of Cha Cha: national (Nakadia, Mung Kunt, Bata Live percussion) and international (Joe Rickard, DJ A, Darragh Casey) DJs set the beat and entertain a crowd of dancers on the beach. Special events at Cha Cha are wildly advertised on large posters displayed all around Chaweng.

Chaweng Night Market, despite its name, is not exactly a full and proper market. While there is a fantastic array of dining options, there is very little else, with only a couple of stalls selling clothes and souvenirs. Established behind the large and popular fitness centre Star Gym, the market is effectively a large food court, with a choice of local Thai food as well as European and international choices and even a couple of small bars. Chaweng Stadium – The Event Center

0

Chaweng Stadium – The Event Center is the latest addition to Chaweng’s Thai Boxing scene. Located at the back of Soi Solo Bar off Chaweng Beach Road, this stadium (slightly smaller than Phatchabuncha Stadium) organises major Muay Thai events with local and foreign fighters twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 21:00 until midnight (or earlier if fast knock-outs occur).

Paradoxically at the same time gracious and brutal, Thai Boxing is the promise of an evening filled up with adrenalin and emotion. The throbbing and acute Sarama music that accompanies Muay Thai matches has a hypnotic effect on the audience as it increases in speed and volume according to the intensity of the boxers’ engagement.

  • Opening Hours: 21:00 – midnight on Tuesdays and Fridays

Chaweng Walk

0

Chaweng Walk is a recent addition to Chaweng’s shopping/dining/nightlife scene; opened in 2013 on a large empty plot linking Chaweng Beach Road to the beach located between Banana Fan Sea Samui and Tradewinds by Lawana, Chaweng Walk is a daily market in the same vein as Chaweng Walking Street (their rather similar names can be slightly confusing).

One side of Chaweng Walk is open-air while the other is covered with a corrugated iron roof; the open-air area has a paved trail flanked by something like 30 stalls selling an eclectic choice of beach wear, handcrafted souvenirs, spa oils, cheap jewellery, and souvenirs while the covered area features a food court (tables and chairs) with a dozen stalls selling Thai snacks and street food from chicken satay to grilled sausages and squid to smoothies, and more. Live Thai music is performed on a small stage set towards the beach. Chaweng Walk is Thainess at its best as it offers a good way to mingle with locals in a friendly atmosphere, and to sample local delicacies at rock-bottom prices.

  • Opening Hours: daily from 16:30 – 22:00
  • Location: off Chaweng Beach Road in the central area of the beach

Cubos

0

Opening in September 2015 in the building which used to be the well-established GB Lounge & Bar, Cubos became a fast favourite, particularly with the locals, for its Mexican theme and funky style. Great local DJs play house and hip-hop beats well into the early morning, with a funky and colourful ground floor tequila bar for enjoying the cheap drinks and the main club in the upstairs section.

Coco Bar

0

Quite a modest-looking venue from the outside (except for the purple walls), inside you will find a very popular karaoke bar and nightclub. Israeli-run, with live DJs and groups almost universally from Israel, it is no surprise that it is most popular with tourists of that ilk. The club has been running since 2012 and its remarkable popularity led them to open a sister-venue in Phuket in 2015. It’s quite a small venue where the style is to sit and socialise rather than stand and dance.

Dream Girls

0

The only Thai-style go-go bar in the whole of Soi Green Mango, Dream Girls is quite small and simple. It features comfortable tiered seating around the outside of the room and a ring of bar stools right by the revolving stage. That’s about as racy as it gets because there are no raunchy shows or special acts. The girls are quite shy about coming to sit with punters, but are nice and friendly once they do. With a local beer costing 130 baht and a drink for your female companion costing 190 baht, it is one of the pricier places on the street.

  • Opening Hours: 18:00 – 02:00
  • Location: Near the entrance to Soi Green Mango, Chaweng

Galaxy Samui

Styling itself as a “world class erotic cabaret club”, it is effectively a high-end go-go bar with Russian and eastern European dancers. Significantly more expensive than Thai-style bars like Dream Girls, you do at least get what you pay for, with bottle service and exciting special dances and performances, as well as private rooms for individual performances (that’s not an innuendo). Located in one of the darker sections of the street, opposite Hush bar, the interior is very plush and swanky.

Happy Bar

0

Happy Bar is the largest of the beer bars on the darker side of Soi Green Mango and is pretty much archetypal. It has a couple of neon-lit bars serving cheap drinks (including vodka buckets from 150 baht), with TVs showing international sports, two football tables, four good pool tables and young ladies calling out to passing punters. In fairness, the people are very friendly – arguably too much so – and it helps to create quite a fun atmosphere.

KC Beach Club is a popular pool party venue located right on Chaweng Beach. Part of the KC Pool Villas resort, its large freeform swimming pool is the home of regular parties featuring international DJs while the surrounding facilities provide great food, cocktails and massages.

The pace at KC Beach Club is extremely variable. When it is not a special party day, it has a very relaxed vibe, where the most you’ll move is lifting your drink to your mouth – the service staff will look after almost everything else. The themed parties are almost the mirror opposite, with high-energy house music, live DJs and musicians and even show dancers to add to the party atmosphere. Read More...

Henry Africa's Bar

0

Henry Africa’s Bar started life as just a single unit backpackers’ bar. It now five times that size and is the largest, most popular beer bar on the whole street. Its runaway success is attributed to a great party atmosphere, with a good selection of current pop and dance music. You will also find a few pool tables and widescreen TVs showing international sports. Drinks prices start from a mere 70 baht for a local beer, with buckets and great offers on shots also available. The service is good and the notorious “ladies of the night” are the exception rather than the rule.

Hush

0

Hush is one of the smaller bars on Soi Green Mango, yet also one of the most popular. It features live DJs playing the best hip-hop, creating a fantastic party atmosphere. Drinks are reasonably priced, with buy-one-get-one-free on buckets during happy hour (from 21:00 to 02:00) as well as great deals on shots, such as 200 baht for four of tequila. They have their own signature shots, with names too fruity to write here. To some extent, that is the tone of the bar, which has scantily-clad staff and its fair share of bar girls.

Legends Bar

0

Legends Bar is a long-established water hole on Chaweng Beach Road; located in the heart of Koh Samui’s prime resort town, in proximity with Soi Green Mango, this cool bar has for motto: "no techno, no Spice Girls, no boy bands!” The music played at Legends Bar includes all the classics from the ‘60s to the ‘90s: rock, pop, hard, blues, Legends is the right place for those who love original music played with real instruments.

The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and the décor of the bar features vintage memorabilia hanged on the walls around the bar. An outdoor terrace at front of the venue offers a great people watching spot on the constant hustle and bustle of Chaweng’s main street. Cool place indeed to step back in the past, chill-out, and enjoy the all-day & all-night happy hour (all cocktails at 100 baht!).

Lipsmackers Beach Bar

0

One of the two bars to carry the name (the other being on Chaweng Beach Road), the original and most popular Lipsmackers Bar is on the beach, by Al’s Resort. A simple palm-thatch hut with plastic garden chairs and tables on the sand, a rough wooden sign beckons drinkers with the promise of 100-baht cocktails during the happy hour between 15:00 and 20:00. Even outside of this, the drinks prices are good and the atmosphere is fun yet very laid-back, with easy-listening and reggae music playing. They sometimes also have live music and fire shows.

Monkey Bay

0

Monkey Bay - Beachfront Bistro & Bar is a cool and unpretentious venue located right on Chaweng Beach at the end of Chaweng Walk (between Banana Fan Sea Samui and Tradewinds by Lawana). Featuring a small open-sided one storey building, the central attraction of this bar is the pleasure of having a drink with your toes in the sand under the cooling shade of tall, tropical almond trees.

The drink-list hosts all the usual suspects regarding soft drinks and beers (Singha, Tiger, and Leo are at 90 baht for a small bottle), and also features a long list of classic and long drink cocktails (180 to 200 baht), and ‘detox healthy drinks’ (for instance, the Strawberry Mojito – strawberry, pineapple, lime, mint leaf, and ginger – is rich in antioxidant, enzymes, and vitamin C). Monkey Bay is indeed a great spot to chill-out before or after dinner, and in case you would like something to sample while drinking, Chaweng Walk’s food court is just a few metres away.

On Street Bar

0

On Street Bar is certainly the most original venue in Chaweng’s tremendous nightlife scene; this tiny venue set on a small piece of waste ground right next to the entrance of KC Beach Club Hotel is made of corrugated iron and recycled wood painted in bright colours – without them, its one metre wide façade would be totally unnoticed as the stall/shop next door sells vivid paper chandeliers. Made with any old things and featuring recovered furnishing and décor set on the open ground, On Street Bar is a very popular water hole, a proof that the trendiness of a venue is not always related to the amount of money invested to make it shiny and attractive.

Run by a charming Thai couple, this place is perfect to spend a relaxing evening chatting and drinking with friends, while listening to the acoustic live music performed by a talented guitarist/vocalist. Affordable prices, good vibe, unpretentious friendly atmosphere and good music, On Street Bar is an arty place at which punters are sure to spend a great evening in Chaweng.

Our Bar Irish Pub

0

No nightlife hub in Thailand is complete without an Irish bar, it seems, and Soi Green Mango is no exception. Our Bar is one of the better examples, with more focus on creating the fun, friendly and welcoming atmosphere (the “craic”) than the theme pub-style décor. A simple sort of place, its enduring popularity comes from friendly staff and great service, as well as good prices and a good selection of drinks – naturally including draught Guinness.

Paris Follies Cabaret is probably the most bawdy and risqué of the Koh Samui ladyboy shows, with the most buxom dancers wearing the most revealing costumes. They star in a one-hour show filled with humour and exciting dance routines.

Formerly Christy’s Caberet, then Moulin Rouge Cabaret, the show at Paris Follies features music from (and impersonations of) Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Britney Spears and more – all performed by women who used to be men, of course. If you happen to be in the front row, you’ll need to have a healthy sense of humour because you can expect to become part of the show, including being invited to jump up on stage and dance! Reggae Pub Koh Samui is among the top-rated nightlife destinations in Chaweng Beach, second only to the Green Mango Club in terms of international fame and sheer size. The large nightclub is the focal point of the street it gives its name to – Soi Reggae – and attracts a huge tourist crowd for its easy-going style and rhythms.

As the name suggests, the main choice of music is reggae, with some rock ballads thrown in for good measure. The house band and live DJs sometimes throw in a few funky dance tunes and hip-hop as the place fills up. Despite being the second-largest establishment on the island, it really does fill up, particularly from 23:00 onwards. Read More...

Samui Pub

0

Boldly claiming to have been the first coyote dance club in Koh Samui, Samui Pub is still quite a popular venue. It has a lakeside location, a choice of indoor and outdoor seating, a good selection of high-quality spirits and cocktails available from a 12m main bar and, of course, a dedicated staff of friendly, lightly-dressed servers and dancers. This is not a go-go bar, though, and the main stage – with its modern light and sound equipment – sees live international DJs and groups performing on a regular basis.

Soi Bar Solo follows the pattern set by the other major nightlife hubs in Chaweng of being named after the biggest and most renowned club, which usually marks one end of the street. In this case, it is Bar Solo, which is at the Chaweng Beach Road end of this 100m long soi, which is the main attraction. Chaweng Stadium Event Center, at the other end, is also a big draw (particularly on a fight night) and results in the place sometimes being called Soi Chaweng Stadium Event Center.

Despite its small size, Soi Bar Solo has quite an impressive choice of very laid-back bars, almost all of which have a mostly gay clientele – a fact made all the more self-evident by the rainbow flags and names like Pride Bar. There is also a limited choice of clubs, massage bars and restaurants while the two main transgender cabaret shows in Chaweng are found in adjoining streets. Read More...

Soi Green Mango is to Koh Samui what Soi Cowboy is to Bangkok and Walking Street is to Pattaya, albeit on a smaller scale. It is the beating heart of the island’s nightlife, home to cheap drinks, loud music and good times. The highlight of the street is the namesake establishment at the very end of the road – The Green Mango Club, which has been an institution of Chaweng’s nightlife for decades.

There are a good few beer bars and couple of go-go bars to be found, all with the compulsorily scantily-clad girls stood outside trying to lure you in. The popularity of the street has started to slip in recent years, particularly with the rise of Samui’s beach clubs and especially ARK Bar. However, Soi Green Mango still has a lot to offer once it comes to life after midnight and into the small hours of the morning. Read More...

Out on the street leading to the Reggae Pub from Chaweng Centre you'll find bar after small bar lining the passage with the usual cast of friendly girls, not very original music, a pool table here and there and a general air of seediness. This is Soi Reggae and it used to be a very busy area with bars staying open all night and many punters wandering through but since a few years it has been losing its snappiness.

The main attraction of the area is the huge, two-storey Reggae Pub with a live music stage and pool tables but then again this place has not moved with the times and only seems to attract the type of people who actually like to hear Bob Marley imitations and even Hotel California played night after night. Things only get hopping here after midnight when the reggae finally stops and techno takes its place.

Things get pretty desperate in the surrounding bars the later it gets and the girls get more 'aggressive' in their tactics. You have been warned… Still, it can be a lot of fun if it's all approached with a sense of humour and fun. Read More...

Starz Cabaret Samui is quite a compact little ladyboy theatre, but makes up for it with its high-quality performances. The 45-minute-long show features a mix of song and dance routines featuring traditional Thai dances alongside impressive impersonations of Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Beyonce and others.

Located right on Chaweng Beach Road, near to the Escudo Beach Club Hotel, Starz Cabaret is certainly the easiest show of its kind to find and, with entry costing just 200 baht, it is also the cheapest. You can also choose to forgo the entry fee if you buy a cocktail, but these are inevitably more expensive than the entry ticket and are not particularly tasty. However, you will not be pressured to buy a second one.

The glamourous dancers at Starz Cabaret Samui are very professional and their handmade costumes are fantastic. The show includes a lot of laughs as well as internationally-inspired dances such as Bollywood-style and belly-dancing, making it a thoroughly good time. Read More...

Sound is a great outdoor venue. The front bar plays hip-hop and R&B to a packed house, while the dance floor at the back has DJ's spinning harder house, and there's a big swimming pool separating the two dance floors, which sets the scene for some late-night water fights. This is a really popular venue for the late-night crowd, and doesn't really get going until after 01:00 when it becomes crammed with high-energy revellers.

Directly opposite the Green Mango Club, it has a busy party atmosphere and great nightly drinks offers, uniquely including the Jägermeister shot vending machine at the back of the bar.

The place generally only gets busy after midnight, but it then gets really busy. It is arguably the busiest bar in Samui. Found right at the end of Soi Green Mango, the partying only really gets started at midnight. There’s usually a big boost to the crowd at around 02:00, after the nearby ARK Bar closes. Black Moon & Escape Parties

0

Three huge rave-like parties are held in a similar spirit as the world-famous Koh Phangan Full Moon Party every month in Koh Samui: the Black Moon and two Escape (Half Moon) Parties. Some of the world’s leading DJs have played at the Black Moon Party, including Brandon Block, Judge Jules and Timo Maas. The parties start as soon as the night falls and last until the wee hours.

Originally organized at Phru Chaweng (aka Chaweng Lake View, a park in the northeastern corner of Chaweng Lake which has a capacity for approximately 4,000 people), the location changes from one event to the other; these parties are sometimes held at Samrong Bay (aka ‘Secret Beach’ near the northern tip of Koh Samui, near Plai Laem) but this location is not very popular due to the difficulty and cost of getting there, and lately it was held at Chaweng Event Centre. Precise information about dates and locations can be obtained at most travel agencies and night clubs in Chaweng.
