Samui International Airport
Travel and Local Information Guide0
Samui International Airport is one of the coolest and best-looking airports in Thailand (if not in all of Southeast Asia). Privately owned and run by Bangkok Airways, Samui Airport is located between Bophut and Chaweng beach, in the northeastern part of the island. Officially opened in 1989, its first version had a strong tropical touch as most of the buildings were made of bamboo-and-thatch.
Entirely renovated and expanded in 2004, Samui International Airport fortunately did not lose its charming exotic feel. The two terminals are open-sided (there are few indoor areas, except for the offices and gift shops), and a great deal of tropical flowers and plants give it a keen holiday atmosphere.Read More

With over two million passengers in 2014 (departures, arrivals, and connections), Samui International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in Thailand after Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok), Don Muang (Bangkok), Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai. Despite the constantly increasing volume of passengers arriving to Samui by plane, the process through immigration, customs, and baggage recovery remains as smooth as it could.
A great choice of transfer options are available at Samui International Airport’s transportation desk: from private car taxi (airport to Chaweng for 500 baht); private minivan taxi (for up to six passengers, airport to Chaweng for 800 baht); shared minivan transfers (airport to Chaweng for 130 baht, but you’ll have to wait for up to 20 minutes until the minibus has at least six passengers); and car rental counters (Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Avis) are available in the arrivals area. You can also pre-arrange airport transfer or car rental.
Samui International Airport has a neat and clean shopping and dining area named Samui Park Avenue. It features plush boutiques, cafés, a cigar outlet, a Jim Thompson silk shop, a Bookazine branch, a skin care and health spa shop, a pub, a pizzeria, and more. It is pretty upmarket and occasionally features live jazz music. It is just great for people in transit.
For people interested in unusual artefacts, Samui Robot Group shop is located just outside Samui International Airport. It is worth making a stop at this 'recycled' factory outlet shop that sells fantastic Alien and Predator-like monsters built out of used auto and motorcycle parts. Somewhat scary looking (some of them are huge), they're nevertheless testimony to Thai handicraft skills. It is open from 08:30 – 19:30.
