West Coast Restaurants & Dining
Where and What to Eat in West Coast
Koh Samui's undeveloped west coast is a great place to go to enjoy local dishes in a secluded atmosphere. On this side of the island the cuisine is mainly traditional Thai fare at great prices - and generally spicy enough to take your head off! Get back to nature and explore the original flavours of Koh Samui. Its a good idea to take a map though, you don't want to become part of the menu!
Big John Seafood Restaurant
This restaurant is located at Lipa Noi in the southwest of the island - turn down the road for the Donsak Ferry and look out for the sign. Diners staying within 10km, can take advantage of a free pick up service. Big John's is is right on the beach and is one of the best spots on the island for sunset dining. If you happen to make it for lunch, then Lipa Noi is probably the best kids' beach on the island - it's shallow, clear and completely coral and boulder free. There's also a playground on the premises to keep them entertained.
The restaurant prides itself on selling some of the finest seafood dishes on Samui. Much of it is locally caught and bought, market fresh, on a daily basis. The menu offers almost every fish dish imaginable; a couple of outstanding ones are Lobster Massaman (succulent chunks of lobster cooked in a creamy Southern Thai curry sauce with peanuts) and Steamed Pomfret with Plum Sauce (the meaty fish easily slips of the bones to mingle with the sweet sauce). There's also the likes of king prawn, sea bass, red snapper, snow fish, oysters and blue crabs on the menu.
Most evenings, proprietor Khun Meaw will entertain diners with a few show tunes. If she's not around, there's always someone up on stage performing.
